The Article Stirring The NCAA WBB Pot 🍯
After circulating through the officiating community, ‘The Athletic’ article has left a level of uncertainty in it’s wake…
With millions of eyes focusing their attention on college basketball’s biggest event, one news outlet decided to spark a discussion that caused some grumblings amongst the officiating community and women’s basketball in particular.
If this is your first time hearing about this…what rock have you been living under?
There’s a saying in the officiating community, “if you want someone to find out about something, tell a referee.”
Those of us who have been involved in officiating for any number of years, know, that most refs can’t hold water 😅. News of this [seemingly random] article has spread across the community like wildfire.
First and foremost, this is not a stance on either side of the “issues” surrounding WBB officiating and how it is perceived.
The article, written by Chantel Jennings and Nicole Auerbach, addresses many points that have mostly been kept to locker room talk amongst officials. However, with the amount of detail that was reported in the article, it has been very surprising to see how people have had completely different interpretations of the information.
The road that each of us embarked on when we started this referee journey, has no doubt taken many unexpected twists and turns. The uncertainty surrounding the officiating community (especially in WBB) may cause us to pause as a collective and possibly as individuals.
Could this fork in the road bring major changes to how the business of officiating operates? Possibly.
What remains true, regardless of industry headlines or locker room debates, is that YOUR CRAFT IS YOUR OWN. While systemic concerns deserve attention, your dedication to improvement shouldn't waver with the news cycle.
Keep focusing on what you can control:
Your preparation
Your professionalism
Your performance on the court
The landscape may shift, but those who consistently show up ready to officiate with integrity will always find their path forward. As this conversation continues to evolve, we'll keep you informed while providing the resources you need to navigate your own officiating journey. 🙏🏼
